Karong MLA assures help to persons with disabilities

International Day of Persons with Disabilities was observed by Senapati Disable People's Association, Manipur (SDPAM) in collaboration with District Social Welfare Department at Multi-Purpose Hall, Senapati on Saturday.
The event was attended by Karong AC MLA J Kumo Sha as chief guest, Senapati deputy commissioner (DC) Mahesh Chaudhari as guest of honour and district social welfare officer W Hemender Singh as functional president.
Hingba Aloysius, convenor of the function, stated that the observance of the day was aimed at promoting an understanding of disability issues and mobilising support for the dignity, rights and wellbeing of persons with disabilities.
In his keynote address, Ng Khayuingam, co-convenor, mentioned difficulties including technical one faced by the organisers as no one was interested in attending the function, adding that there were times when officials and other higher-ups had neglected them as they belong to the people with disabilities.
DC Mahesh Chaudhari during his speech expressed keenness to organise skill development for the association in near future.
He then asked the SDPAM to identify the types of skill development programme that would enable them generate income in near future.
Meanwhile, W Hemender Singh highlighted the different schemes and projects for persons with disabilities under the department, stating that persons with disabilities can avail pension scheme if they possess disability certificate issued under UDID project with a disability percentage of 60 per cent and above.
He further informed that eligibility criteria and docu ments required are provided in the form which can be obtained from the District Social Welfare Office, Senapati.
Chief guest MLA J Kumo Sha assured his continuous support for the welfare of the association and asked the members not to be disheartened for who they are, describing them that they differently abled persons.
The MLA also assured them to look into the memorandum submitted to him to allot plot to establish their office in the district headquarters.
The SDPAM felicitated Vividson Sha, who won medals in different games for the disabled.
Wheelchairs were also distributed to select beneficiaries from the District Social Welfare Office, Senapati.
State Platform for Disable People's Organisation also attended the programme apart from different DLOs, CSO leaders and members of the SDPAM.
