Imphal, December 02, 2014:
A joint action committee (JAC) against the proposed Imphal Ring Road (Tharon to Lanthungching) today urged the Manipur Government to construct the projected Imphal Ring Road outside the city to avoid environmental effects of air and noise pollution.
The JAC's convenor Jagamlung Panmei told Newmai News Network that most of the cities in India constructed their Ring Roads 10 km to 15 km away from main areas of the cities.
He said the Manipur Government should give confidence in long term policy while developing the state, accusing Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh and his Cabinet colleagues of trying to earn illegal money from the proposed Imphal Ring Road construction.
The Government should carry out realignment of the area from Tharon to Lanthungching which has been included in the plan, he demanded.
Jagamlung demanded that the state Government construct the Imphal Ring Road in the peripheries of the main city area to provide road connectivity to people residing there.
He accused the Ibobi Govt of attempting to uproot all the tribal people from their settlement areas in Imphal in the name of erecting NIT, Capital Project and many other projects.
The Chief Minister is not respecting the rights of the tribal people enshrined in the Constitution, he alleged while condemning his Government's projects.
Referring to media reports that the process for selecting consultants was continuing for the Imphal Ring Road, he said the reports have caused confusion to the public while terming them as "misleading." He said the media reports had also threatened that no compensation would be paid to all the families which were excluded in the survey conducted by the Government for the project.
The JAC leader reiterated that it would approach the High Court of Manipur to seek justice for the cause.
