Rights to health and medical ethics discussed

The need for addressing the issues related to 'unethical' callous attitude of medical professionals towards poor people was echoed today during a one-day public hearing on rights to health and medical ethics in Manipur organised by Human Rights Initiative (HRI) in collaboration with Women Action and Development (WAD) at Manipur Press Club here today.
Taking part in the public hearing as one of the resource persons, senior journalist Brojendro Ningombam rued that doctors are for the rich people and the poor section of the people have find it hard these days to get medical attention.
He stated that doctors are going overboard violating their ethics these days.
Love and compassion should be the bottomline for the medical professionals, the journalist noted and proposed to have a high power committee involving lawyers, civil society organisations and doctors to check this 'unethical' practice by medical practitioners.
Earlier, giving a key note address, HRI executive director Wahengbam Joykumar said that the objective of organising the programme was to improve the healthcare system in Manipur by sensitizing the public particularly the police, the media, the medical professionals and the civil society organisations and also the citizens about their rights and duties regarding the health.
