Territorial integrity non-negotiable: UCM

Imphal, July 28 2026: The United Committee Manipur (UCM) has categorically asserted that the territorial integrity of Manipur is non-negotiable, while reacting to a report published by The Diplomat concerning an issue related to the State's boundary.

In a press note issued today, the UCM claimed that the report published by The Diplomat indicated that Manipur could lose a portion of its territory as part of a move by the Government of India (GoI) to resolve the boundary dispute with Myanmar.

Claiming that Manipur's territorial boundaries have remained under constant threat since the State's merger with India, the UCM asserted that it would continue to oppose any move perceived to undermine the State's territorial integrity.

According to the report, the GoI has proposed completing the demarcation of a 1.4-square-mile stretch of land between Border Pillars no 65 and 68 in Chandel district, along the border with Myanmar's Sagaing Region, it said.

UCM said that India and Myanmar are working on an exchange of certain portions of land as per the report.

Stating that Manipur's territorial boundaries were clearly defined at the time of its merger with India in 1949, UCM said that any move compromising the State's territorial integrity would be unacceptable.

It further said that the people of Manipur, along with the UCM, are prepared to safeguard the territorial integrity of the State at all costs, and reiterated that the territorial integrity of Manipur is non-negotiable.
