Postal service staff protest burning mail bags

Imphal, July 28 2026:
Imphal Head Post Office staff staged a protest demonstration today, condemning the burning of as many as 37 mail bags at Shangkai Kuki village yesterday.
Dispatched under security escort from Imphal, the mail bags containing parcels, personal documents including passports and bank ATM cards, and goods were confiscated and burnt at Shangkai Kuki village yesterday.
The mail bags were being dispatched to Ukhrul, Kamjong and Somdal when the vehicle carrying it was intercepted.
Imphal Head Post Office staff said the driver of the mail van was threatened at gunpoint and the mail bags were forcibly taken out and destroyed while the security escort didn't intervene.
The staff said they strongly condemn the security forces for failing to intervene and prevent the incident from happening.
The mail bags had many documents of extreme importance and personal value.
No group or community should target postal service, they said.
