Committee decries failure of Govt to get work started on sports varsity

Imphal, October 08 2016: Taking cognizance of the controversy over the proposed site for the National Sports University, the National Sports University Demand Committee has asked the State Government to look at other places and suggest another site to the Centre before the Assembly election.

In a statement issued to the press today, the Committee asked the Government to consider setting up the university at Koukrak and Senjam Chirang.

Accusing the Government of creating the controversy, the committee said that the dispute at the Yaithibi Loukon may have been settled if the Government had translated the Right to Fair Compensation and Resettlement Rules, 2014 into action and held public hearings with the study report prepared by the assessment team.

It reminded that the Chief Secretary through local papers on July 15, 2016 had assured to resolve the pending case besides stating that the Bill will be passed in the then Parliament session after meeting officials of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India.

The statement reiterated that the Committee had suggested that the propsoed University be taken to an undisputed site when the Government came up with the proposal to set up the varsity at Yaithibi Loukon.

This was during a discussion session at the Chief Minister's office, said the Committee.

The committe had even hinted that Koukrak and Senjam Chirang may be suitable for the varsity as there would be no dispute and its favourable location such as being near to Khuman Lampak Sports Complex, availability of water and power electricity, besides adequate secruity.

The statement maintained that the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports on May 26 had even sent an ultimatum to the State Government stating the Ministry would look for an alternate site if the State Government fails to name the site.
