ITAC calls for fair SIR exercise in Jiribam

Jiribam, August 03 2026: The Indigenous Tribes Advocacy Committee (ITAC), Pherzawl and Jiribam districts, has urged the authorities to ensure that the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls is conducted in a fair, transparent and impartial manner, particularly in areas inhabited by tribal communities.

In a press release, ITAC said the conflict between the Meitei community and Kuki-Zo and Hmar communities, had remained unresolved since May 3, 2023, with affected communities continuing to live amid uncertainty despite repeated government interventions.

The committee urged the authorities to ensure that officials involved in the SIR exercise prevent any form of discrimination or bias and safeguard the rights and interests of tribal communities throughout the process.

ITAC also stated that a solution acceptable to the tribal communities of Jiribam and Pherzawl had yet to be reached, making peaceful coexistence difficult under the prevailing circumstances.

It said unrestricted movement across areas inhabited by different communities could pose risks and further aggravate tensions.

The committee said it should not be held responsible for any untoward incidents that might arise from individuals entering tribal areas despite the prevailing circumstances.

ITAC appealed to all concerned to act responsibly, exercise restraint and work towards achieving a just, peaceful and sustainable resolution to the ongoing conflict.
