Man held with 2.216 kg opium; brown sugar seized

Imphal, March 16 2023:
Churachandpur district police arrested one Jampao Haokip (56), son of late Jamkhothang Haokip of Mongneljang village but presently staying at K Salemphai village in Churachandpur district along with 2.216 kg of opium and 4.4 kg of poppy seeds while commando team of Moreh seized 929 grams of brown sugar on Thursday.
Jampao Haokip was rounded up from his K Salemphai village house by a police team led by Churachandpur police station OC inspector N Thangzamuan and SI Zairemthang based on information regarding caching of poppy seeds.
SDM Tuibong Jangmin-len Lupho was also present during the operation, which was conducted in the morning.
During the operation, 866 grams of opium were also found concealed in an Everyday powder milk packet and 1.350 kg of opium contained in a white polythene bag.
The poppy seeds were found wrapped in a black cloth.
A case has been registered under NDPS Act at Churachandpur police station.
On the other hand, a team of CDO Moreh seized 929 grams of brown sugar packed in 30 soap cases from Moreh Nepali Basti area during a surprise frisking operation on Thursday around 3.45 pm.
Police source said that an unknown individual came towards Nepali Basti from Indo-Myanmar border carrying a yellowish colour sand bag.
On being intercepted by the CDO team, the person threw the bag near a pharmacy shop and escaped into Myanmar.
The seized contraband item is estimated to worth around Rs 1.85 crore in the international market.
