Imphal, May 11 2014 :
The lone three public facilities of Primary School, PHC and Water Supply scheme provided by the State Government to the villagers of Thanga Karang, a floating islet in Loktak Lake in Bishnupur district, were found in a totally dysfunctional state, leaving the life of the tiny fishermen community in a complete mess.
Located in the middle of Loktak Lake, this islet is inhabited by nearly 4, 000 people, mostly fishermen, belonging to 310 households.
Although the State Government has provided very limited basic amenities to this populace, it was discovered that the villagers were not getting the benefits at all.
"The Government Primary School, PHC and Water Supply scheme, the only three public facilities, at this islet have been left totally dysfunctional since many years," said a local resident named Haobijam Gourahari.

He said that it was a mere dream for them to access to safe drinking water.
Gourahari also disclosed that not a single doctor has been attending the PHC since its establishment several years ago.
He said that the absence of medical doctors at the PHC had made their lives very risky during emergencies.
He recalled that a local woman died recently during child delivery.
"Strong winds and turbulent waterways during night times often do not allow our boats to reach the hospital during emergencies," he said.
"We're anxiously waiting for the blessing the Government to send at least one medical doctor to the health centre," Gourahari added.
At the same time, he said that the lone Primary School at the village had been turned into a cow's shed and so the children were unwilling to go and attend classes.
"We're really shocked to see the filthy condition of this school.
The Government needs to look after it", he pleaded.
