Science meet-2014 begins to foster scientific temper

Science Meet 2014 under the theme 'Fostering Scientific Temper' has been inaugurated today at the Manipur Science Aquarium situated at the DM College Campus, Imphal.
The five-day annual event is organised by Manipur Science and Technology Council in collaboration with the STFM, MAPS, MASCA and GENIM.
Kh Raghumani, Additional Secretary (Science & Technology), Government of Manipur, who graced as chief guest of the inaugural function, stated that scientific innovations are unlimited in this world.
In the absence of scientific knowledge, development is impossible as almost all commodities used by the human beings in day to day life are produced with the help of science.
With the speedy and innumerable changes brought about by Information Technology, the world has almost become a global village.
Human Resource development has been effected with both science and arts subjects.
By the 1970s, learning was based more on theory as students of higher classes from class XI and XII were imparted practical classes in the laboratory.
However nowadays, students of lower classes have also been imbibed the practical knowledge of science, he said.
He further said that the purpose of holding Science Meet is to imbibe scientific knowledge to students.
In his presidential address, Director of Manipur Science and Technology Council Th.Surendranath expressed optimism that organizing Science Meet would enable the young students to articulate their hidden talents.
Manipur Science and Technology Council has been organizing Science Meet since 1997 and from 1999 onwards, the annual event has been conducted on various themes.
Participation of students in the Meet has also increased manifold during the last few years.
Besides gaining valuable knowledge, a number of participating students have also demonstrated their innovations in the field.
There have been students who could win various prizes at the national level meets, he added.
Students hailing from various educational institutions of the state are taking part in the five-day event where a number of models based on science and technology are being displayed.
As part of the event, Manoharmayum Manihar will be honoured with Dr.Ibeyaima Award for Innovators which carries a cash of Rs 20,000, a memento and a citation.
Like every year, there will also be various competitions where students could participated and win prizes during the five-day long science meet.
