Thoubal, May 11 2014 :
In an effort to make Chakpi River a source of potable water, hundreds of youth under the initiative of Maha Area Baptist Youth fellowship (MABYF) carried out a voluntary cleanliness drive yesterday along the river stretch from Mantri Pantha to Koinonia School in Hnahringkhu, Chandel.
Dumped waste materials along the river bank were cleaned during the drive.
The youths later took out a rally in their attempt to create awareness among the residents of the area.
The rally started from Hnahringkhu village via Japhou Bazar and proceeded towards the public garbage dumping site located near District Forest Office, Chandel.
During the rally placards reading 'Chakpi River Is Our Life.
Treat It Well', 'Let Chakpi River Flow In Peace', 'Don't be Selfish, Think For Generations' were displayed.
Pollution level in Chakpi River, which is considered the soul of Chandel residents, has been rising at haphazard rate as it almost becomes the dumping site for the nearby residents thereby rendering its water unfit for human consumption and posing health hazard.
At few locations, kitchen waste and even latrine outlets are found running directly into the river.
The youth's initiative comes against the backdrop of water scarcity that hit the State as well as the district.
