Governor sees State as cultural hub

Governor VK Duggal has stated that Manipur would one day become the focal point of Indian cultures and the foremost task of all exponents of Manipuri literature is to develop it to the level of a classical language.
The Governor was speaking at the concluding function of the 79th annual session of Manipuri Sahitya Parishad held in JN Manipur Dance Academy auditorium.
The Governor stated that it was his good fortune that he could mingle and interact with the luminaries and scholars of Manipuri culture.
He also congratulated all the writers and proponents of Manipuri culture and literature selected by Manipuri Sahitya Parishad for different awards.
Noting that Manipuri Sahitya Parishad is one of the oldest among all the groups dedicated to Manipuri literature, VK Duggal said that Manipur Sahitya Parishad has contributed a lot to Manipuri literature since its establishment.

Manipuri Sahitya Parishad started distributing annual awards in 1939 in honour of the then most popular artistes of Manipuri music.
Now Manipuri Sahitya Parishad is giving awards to outstanding people working in different fields.
The Governor also noted that some of the litterateurs selected for conferring awards by Manipuri Sahitya Parishad have been already honoured with national awards and Padmashree titles.
As a result of the Manipuri Sahitya Parishad's relentless effort for promotion of Manipuri language, Meiteilon was taught up to the Graduate in Calcutta University as early as 1948.Meiteilon was given recognition by the Sahitya Akademi in 1985 before it was included in the 8th Schedule of the Indian Constitution in 1992 .
Now Manipuri language occupies a prominent position in the cultural map of India.
The foremost task ahead is development of the language to the level of a classical language, the Governor asserted.
Manipur Sahitya Parishad president Prof Elangbam Dinamani said that the cash component of their awards is trifling yet it embodies genuine appreciation of the recipients' contribution to Manipuri literature.
The basic objectives of Manipuri Sahitya Parishad is promotion of Manipuri language, script, culture and literature.
Later, awards were distributed to 24 selected writers and scholars.
