Team to assess state of Passport office

A team from regional passport office, Guwahati would be visiting the State to inspect the renovation work being done at the former Manipur Legislative Assembly building for opening a passport office at Imphal.
It is also reported that visa on arrival facility would be made available at Moreh and the Imphal airport very soon.
According to a top-ranking official of the State Home Department, the team from regional passport office would come to the State after May 12 to inspect the renovation work being done at the former Legislative Assembly building where a passport office would be opened.
In case the team finds the renovation work satisfactory, computer sets would be installed in order to start online service.
A passport mela would also be held at Imphal in the last part of the current month under the aegis of the regional passport office.
The State Government has already selected two MPS officers who would posted at the passport office as and when it is opened.
Notably, around Rs 7 crore are spent annually by Manipuri people in the course of obtaining passports from the regional passport office, Guwahati.
Police and District Magistrates receive at least 250 to 300 passport applications for verification.
Even a well known Minister of the State was seen standing in queue in front of the regional passport office, Guwahati sometime back.
Informing that visa on arrival facility would be opened at Tulihal Airport and Moreh shortly, the official said that necessary fund has been sanctioned to Manipur Police Housing Corporation to repair the Customs office, Moreh for opening an office of visa on arrival.
Once the repairing work is completed, computer sets would be installed so that status and other details of passport applications can be accessed online, added the official.
