Imphal, May 11 2014 :
The sanctity and exclusiveness of the Women's Market (Ima Keithel) in the heart of Imphal city have been violated by male folk, particularly the non-locals, who entered the market sheds without any restraint.
Although some women vendors have raised objection it, there are others who seem to encourage the intrusion.
A number of non-local men were found sitting, dozing and taking rest at various stalls of Purana Market as if they were their own private residences on Sunday.
Some of the women vendors complained that a lot of non-locals come to their stalls and stay there every day, bothering them in their activities.
The women vendors told Hueiyen Lanpao that they feel very uneasy while experiencing the unnecessary intermingling with the non-locals at Leimaren Shidabi Market inside the Purana Keithel, Ima Market Shed No-I where only fish are sold.
However, at some stalls of Purana Keithel, both men and women, who were in several groups, were found playing ludo games together, although the stalls in Market are run by only women.
This market normally sells only live fish, but at some stalls, dress fish were also found selling.
According to a source in Imphal Municipal Council (IMC), selling of dress fish is not permitted at Purana Market.
"We carry out routine inspection in the three Women's Markets.
Next time, if we find selling dress fish at any of the stalls, we'll take up action," the source warned.
