Lilong Haoreibi College observes anti-drug day

The students' union 2020-21 of Lilong Haoreibi College observed the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking on Saturday on the theme "Share Facts on Drugs, Save Lives".
The observance held online through Zoom Meet App was attended by the Lilong police station's officer in-charge, members of the students union, alumni, anjuman and other stakeholders.
A webinar on the topic 'Role of students in fighting against the drug abuse and illicit trafficking in Lilong areas in Manipur' was also organised by the Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) of the College.
Delivering the key note address of the webinar, principal Dr Raheijuddin Sheikh stressed that as the youngsters in Lilong area are vulnerable to fall prey to drug abuse the institution needs to address the issue by taking up a series of activities involving students and teachers.
Effective drug education is important because young people are faced with many influences to use both licit and illicit drugs.
Education can play a counterbalancing role in shaping a normative culture of safety, moderation, and informed decision making.
Engaging students in drug education will assist them make healthy and safe choices, identify risky situations, and develop strategies to prepare them for challenging situations, the principal maintained.
He also informed that a proposal has been submitted to the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment for outreach programmes and research studies to be conducted in 10 adopted villages under the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan.
The proposed series of activities to be taken up by the institute include sensitizing the student community about the ill-effects of drug abuse and illicit trafficking of drugs, awareness on how to prevent substance abuse and drug addiction, community-based services to help people change substance use patterns, he said.
Dr Raheijuddin also informed that Faculty Development programmes (FDP) in the College for the academicians on their role in creating awareness on drug abuse, mass awareness generation programmes at 10 identified villages in and around Lilong, teachers and students activities in all other schools in the peripheral areas of Lilong other than the host institution, adopting 10 villages vulnerable to drug abuse & illicit trafficking, eradicating substance abuse and drug addiction from the said villages are the other areas or activities enlisted in the proposal, he said.
