Imphal, June 27 2021:
All Manipur Muslim Organisations' Co-Ordinating Committee (AMMOCOC) has urged the state government to take up strict measures for protecting the drivers and handymen along the national highways.
In a statement, the Committee recounted that four people including a truck driver and handymen enroute to Guwahati were recently abducted near 7th Mile Petrol pump, Dimapur by members of DRI, Dimapur Unit.
They were finally released after prolonged torture and on payment of Rs 4 lakh.
Condemning the incident, AMMOCOC denounced the state government for remaining silent on the crimes being committed along the lifeline of the state, not to mention about the collection of illegal taxes and extortion activities along the highways.
As such, it demanded the government to take up steps to protect drivers and handymen plying along the national highways.
"The plight of the four people came to light after AMMO-COC enquired about the same to the state DGP, after which the rescue was made possible", it said, while adding that the Committee will continue to stand for the drivers and handymen in future as well.
