Governor of Manipur VK Duggal, who is also the Chief Rector of Manipur University (MU), and and the Vice-Chancellor of the varsity HNK Sarma have highlighted various matters which need to be addressed for the progress and development of MU during a recent meeting with Union Human Resource Development (HRD) minister Smriti Irani at New Delhi on June 10 .
At the meeting, among others, HRD Minister Irani promised the MU Rector and Vice-Chancellor to expedite the appointment of Visitor's nominees to the various Selection Committees as the term of the earlier Visitor's nominees has already expired.

The Union also promised to expedite the nomination of two members of Rajya Sabha to the varsity's Court and two members of the Court to the Executive Council, and the amendment of Statue 15 (1) and 19 (2) as had been requested in earlier communications.
When asked about his comments on the June 10 meeting with the Union HRD Minister, Prof HNK Sarma told Hueiyen Lanpao on Thursday that the varsity hosts the East Zone sports event at least thrice in a year, which is participated by nearly 60 universities from across the country, and hence the Minister was requested to take prompt steps to establish a mini sports stadium at the MU complex.
To this request, the Union Minister assured them that construction of the proposed mini stadium would be considered soon, Prof Sarma said.
The HRD Minister was also urged to set up a science instrumentation centre at the varsity to ensure proper availability of equipments to the research scholars while conducting experiments, he disclosed.
At the meeting, Irani also accepted in principle the invitation extended to her for participation in the varsity's Citizens' Day celebration due on October 13 this year.
It may be recalled here that it was on October 13, 2005 that MU became a Central university.
