:Assam Rifles kicked off the Go Green campaign with IGAR (S) Maj Gen Rajeev Chopra and Mrs Rashmi Chopra, president Assam Rifles Wives Welfare Association, planting the first sapling, said a statement issued by the PRO, Assam Rifles today.
Aimed at saving and regenerating the depleting flora in Manipur, the campaign will carry on till July 7 and cover areas around Mantripukhri, Pallel, Tengnoupal, Somsai, Chassad, Shangshak, Keithelmanbi, Thoubal, Kakching, Sajik Tampak, and Churachandpur, said the statement.
Altogether 60,000 saplings including fruit bearing, medicinal and ornamental trees will be planted during the drive, said the statement.
Speaking at the occasion, Maj Gen Rajeev Chopra said that it is a matter of concern that the forest cover in Manipur is depleting rapidly and regeneration has not yet reached a satisfactory level.
He added that the plantation drive is a small but an important measure towards a greener and environment friendly Manipur.
The endeavour will be on creating awareness amongst the local community, especially the youth, for nurturing the planted trees for a greener and healthier future.
