JD-U leader and bother of KNLF Gen Secy shot, hospitalised

A leader of Janata Dal-United (JD-U), who is also an elder brother of the general secretary of a Kuki militant outfit, has been admitted for treatment in a private hospital here after he was shot by armed cadres of KNA (I) last night.
Police said that one Chungzalian Haokip, 45 years, s/o Ngamkhojang Haokip of Tuibong in Churachandpur district was shot at at around 9:30 pm yesterday.
Chungzalian Haokip happens to be the elder brother of Lalmoi Haokip alias Tonglianlal who is the general secretary of Kuki National Liberation Front (KNLF) whose outfit is currently engaging in conflict with UKLF at the moment over establishment of a designated camp of the former at Semol village in Chandel district.
According to the police, Chungzalian Haokip was shot at the abdomen and he is now being treated at Shija Hospitals and Research Institute, Imphal.
Chungzalian Haokip had unsuccessfully contested as a Janata Dal-United (JD-U) candidate in Chandel assembly constituency in Manipur assembly poll of 2012.He is also reportedly a member of Central Committee of JD-U.Meanwhile, KNA (I) has clarified that the 'unfortunate incident' that happened last night near Tuibong in Churachandpur in which Chungalian Haokip was injured was not intentional and the organisation had no intention to harm him.
In a statement, Barack Kuki, Information Secretary of Kuki National Army (KNA)- I said that as per reported by the involved cadres, the incident happened when the cadres who went to talk with him were provoked and attacked by Chungzalian.
In the ensuing melee, one of our cadres accidentally fired his weapon in which he was injured.
The organisation also regretted about the unfortunate incident and shared the sorrow and pain felt by the family members and relatives of Chungzalian Haokip, the statement added.
