Imphal, December 23, 2011:
To save the Manipuris residing in the state of Tripura who are on the verge of losing all the cultural and traditional aspects of being a Manipuri, a Tripura Manipuri
Development Council needs to be instituted in Tripura at the earliest.
Addressing media persons at Life Watch Manipur, Uripok today, Thongal Kajal Singha, executive
member, All Tripura Manipuri Students Association said that in order to institute a Tripura Manipuri Development Council in Tripura, the help and cooperation of the
people of Manipur and the State government is required.
He further stated that according to the census report of 2001, there are 40,000 Manipuris residing in Tripura.
The Manipuris residing in Tripura have given up all the cultural and traditional beliefs and festivals of Manipur, in order to adapt themselves to the place.
They have
even stopped mentioning their surnames in front of their names.
Moreover the Tripura State government has also not provided any reservations for the Manipuris who are
a minority in the state.
As such there is an apprehension that the Manipuris who have been settling in the state for the last 30/40 years, will become extinct in the
near future.
To save the Manipuri people in Tripura, a Tripura Manipuri Development Council in Tripura should be instituted, in line with the Manipuri Development
Society instituted in Assam, he added.
Meanwhile the Life Watch Manipur also expresses deep concern and sorrow over the recent killing of the Chawkidar of Irilbung
Water Supply Scheme and his son.
