One body recovered, search continues

Body of one of the two women, who got drowned in a stream of Challou river in Poi village, has been recovered on Thursday noon in New Tusom village while search operation for the other victim continued till Friday evening.
The recovered body has been identified as that of RS Ngamreila (30), wife of RS Varechung while the search continued in full swing to trace the body of the other victim namely RK Ramreila (35), wife of RK Mathotmi.
The two women were swept away while crossing the stream on October 24 evening.
The stream called Tholiru, which is a tributary of Challou river, had swollen due to incessant rains triggered by Cyclone Sitrang.
They had gone to the field for harvesting paddy and were returning home when the tragic incident happened.
Both the victims were residents of Poi village under Chingai subdivision, Ukhrul district.
Sources said that the body of Ngamreila was first spotted by one Chinaochung Vashum of New Tusom, who stayed overnight at his paddy field which is located close to the river bank.
On spotting a body stuck in between rocks in the river nearby his paddy field at about 1 pm, he immediately passed on the news to other people in the field.
Soon, the search team gathered at the spot and retrieved the body.
The search team comprising villagers from Poi and neighbouring villages like Chingai, Huishu, Kuirei, Kalhang, Challou, New Tusom, Tusom CV, Tusom Khullen, Wahong and Jessami has been camping at the riverside since October 25.On Friday, transport minister Khashim Vashum despatched a team of SDRF along with a police team from Chingai police substation.
The minister also extended financial assistance of Rs 60,000 to each of the victim families.
Relief to the bereaved families has also been coming in both in cash and kind from different corners of the district.
