State level Krishi Mela begins

The four-day State level Krishi Mela-2014, jointly organised by Agricultural Technology Management Agency (ATMA) and State Agriculture Department, got underway at Iboyaima Shumang Leela Shanglen from today.
Deputy Chief Minister Gaikhangam and Agriculture Minister Md Abdul Nasir graced the opening function of the fair as chief guest and president respectively.
Veterinary Department Director Dr Saidokhum Joute, Fisheries Department Director K Saratkumar, CAU Extension Education Director Dr M Premjit, ICAR Joint Director Dr N Prakash and Horticulture and Soil Conservation Joint Director AS Ningmi also attended the function as guests of honour.
Speaking at the occasion, Gaikhangam stressed the need for introduction of modern agriculture techniques.
He said that there is urgent need for enhancement of production as the population is increasing day by day while the area of agriculture land remains the same.
Expressing satisfaction with the products showcased at the fair, the Deputy Chief Minister said that it was all possible due to the hardwork of the farmers.
He also urged the gathering to put in collective effort to make Manipur a self dependant State on foodstuff production.Agriculture and Fisheries Minister Md Abdul Nasir said that the Centre had recently rewarded Rs 2 crore to Manipur for the good works done by farmers and Agriculture Department.
The State Government would send 200 farmers to Maharashtra for participation in Krishi Common Mela to be held from February 9 to 13 .
