WBCC condemns attack on Forest staff

Wildlife and Biodiversity Conservation Committee (WBCC) Manipur has vehemently condemned the attack on staff of Thoubal Forest Range and vandalizing their vehicle at Lilong Usoipokpi on February 3 .
In a release issued on Saturday, WBCC stated that staff of Thoubal Forest Range were attacked by unknown miscreants when they went to prevent/stop illegal excavation of earth in Lilong Usoipokpi area.
Stating that WBCC Manipur in collaboration with like minded individuals/organisations and Forest Department has been carrying out various activities to preserve the wetlands, forest and rivers, the council termed the alleged violence meted out to Forest staff who were carrying out their duties.
WBCC also mentioned that the violence at Lilong Usoipokpi area was not an isolated incident and that similar violence have been reported over the recent past.

Alleging the involvement of various people with power and authority in the said incidents, the council expressed its anguish that such people with vested interest has made the Forest Department irrelevant and unable to carry out their duties effectively.
WBCC appealed to the State Government to encourage the staff of the Forest Department to fulfil their duties efficiently and conserve the Reserved Forest and Protected Forest areas for the overall welfare of the people.
WBCC further urged the Government to look into the matter and punish all involved in the illegal excavation of earth and the violence of February 3 .
