State to host sub-junior hockey nationals

Manipur Hockey would be hosting the 12th Sub-junior Women's national hockey championship from April 28 to May 8 at Khuman Lampak Hockey Stadium, Imphal.
Addressing a press conference at its office premises on Saturday, Manipur Hockey lifetime president Olympian KshThoiba said that state players have always been part of the national hockey teams and the upcoming national championship will help the state in producing more national and international level players.
Expressing concern over the weak position of the state as a team in national competitions despite having world class players, he stressed on the need for providing state of the art training facilities by adopting modern techniques to help improve the performance of state players.
More exposure is also an important factor to promote and encourage state players, he said and added that the championship will be an important exposure for the state players.
Hockey India president Gyanendra Ningomba said that the state would be hosting its third national championship this year after successfully hosting Sub-junior Men's national championship in 2016 and Senior Men's Division-A national championship in 2018.Organising committee has been formed for the championship.
Though the state assembly election is having an impact in the preparations, all out efforts are being put up to organise the championship successfully, Gyanendra said.
On the other hand, measures are being taken up to revive district associations to bring improvement in hockey under which hockey grounds will be developed in different districts including Jiribam and Tamenglong, he said.
Manipur Hockey CEO L Basanta, Hockey India joint secretary PhNirmalata, hockey player ChSakuntala, Manipur Hockey joint secretary S Surjit, executive members P Bandhan and T Purnima were also present at the press conference.
