Imphal, November 12 2014:
Taking strong exception to the series of rape and murder of women in the State recently including disabled women, the State Platform of Disabled Organizations Manipur has blamed the State Government's leniency and failure to award befitting and prompt punishment to the culprits for the increasing cases of violence against women.
Speaking to media persons at Manipur Press Club today, the organization's spokesman Yumnam Surchandra decried that no reservation was made for disabled persons when the Government issued notification for appointment of Panchayati Raj Secretaries.
He also condemned the Government's failure to reserve any seats in the recruitment of Higher Secondary School teachers and appointment to vacant posts in MPSC.
Disabled persons are also human beings and denial of their rights is a blatant case of violating the Constitution of India.
As per the Disabled Act 1995-96, certain seats should be reserved for disabled persons at the time of recruitment to State Government or Central Government offices.
But the Government of Manipur has been violating the same Act repeatedly, Surchandra alleged.
The Government's failure to award befitting and prompt punishment to culprits is responsible for the growing cases of violence against women.
The Government has never shown any seriousness when dealing with crimes against women particularly when the victims are disabled persons, said Surchandra while citing some rape cases which took place at Takyel Blind School, Khongman and Nambol.
Such leniency is intolerable and unwarranted.
The Government must act promptly and ensure that justice is delivered in every criminal case instead of waiting for a mass uprising.
The Government must also ensure that disabled persons get their due share of reservation at the time of recruitment to Government offices otherwise the organization would be constrained to launch all sorts of agitation, added the spokesman.
