Imphal, August 31 2026:
Noting that the census exercise has been deferred, ex-Chief Minister N Biren has exuded confidence that the NRC will be updated.
N Biren has also expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and other BJP Central leaders for listening to the people's voice and deferring the census exercise.
He also lauded the contributions of CSOs and the general public to get the NRC deferred.
As the census exercise has been deferred in line with the people's wish, the Government of India is likely to initiate necessary processes to update the NRC, Biren said.
Pointing out that the common desire of the people is identification of illegal immigrants, the ex-Chief Minister appealed to all sections of people to stop remonstrating against each other.
The common desire of the people is identification of all illegal immigrants through NRC or a similar mechanism with 1951 as the base year and protection of indigenous communities, he said.
Biren appealed to all CSOs and Meira Paibi organisations to pursue all demands through democratic means only.
"Leaving aside all differences, let us stand together and work collectively in the interest of the State and future generations", he added.
The JFD, UNC, the 14 CSOs and BJP MLAs have been working in different manners for the common objective of protecting the indigenous people, Biren said.
"Let us all stick together to the common position of updating the NRC", he added.
