Imphal, August 31 2026: Demanding an assurance from ruling and Opposition MLAs that the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Manipur will be updated before the census is conducted, vendors at Khwairamband Keithel have started an indefinite protest by ceasing work today.

The protest began at around 10 am.

The vendors also unanimously resolved to continue the protest, even if it requires them to spend the night at the market.

Shops adjacent to Khwairamband Keithel also remained closed in support of the demand, with pharmacies being the only exceptions.

Speaking to the media, Campaign for Just and Fair Delimitation (JFD) convenor Jeetendra Ningomba appealed to the people to support the 24-hour general strike called by the JFD, beginning at midnight today.

Saying that people in different localities had already boycotted the census exercise, he appealed to the keithel vendors to do the same.

Both ruling and Opposition MLAs must adopt a resolution to update the NRC before conducting the census, he added.

Khwairamband Nupi Keithel Sinpham Amasung Saktam Kanba Lup president Thoudam Shanti said the vendors launched the protest in support of the demand raised by the Campaign for Just and Fair Delimitation (JFD) to update the NRC before undertaking any census-related activity.

She added that the vendors decided to launch the protest as the Government still has not given any assurance that the NRC would be updated.
