JFD goes ahead with general strike

Not satisfied with the Government's decision to defer census exercise in Manipur, the Campaign for Just and Fair Delimitation (JFD) has decided to go ahead with the 24 hours general strike announced earlier with effect from this midnight.
Notably, a high-level meeting held today at New Delhi with Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla, Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand and Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan decided to defer census operations in Manipur.
Even though the meeting agreed to defer census operations, nothing was said about the demand for updating the National Register of Citizens (NRC) and distinguishing genuine citizens from illegal immigrants.

Moreover the High Court of Manipur today passed an order whereby census exercise in the State was deferred until further orders.
Speaking to media persons at Soibam Leikai, Imphal East this afternoon, JFD organisation secretary Longjam Ratankumar said that they were compelled to go head ahead with the 24-hour general strike as the Government of India has failed to give a concrete assurance to update the NRC .
He said that media, electricity, water supply, medical services and religious functions will be exempted from the purview of the general strike.
Ratankumar said that the Government is yet to issue an official order to update the NRC before census despite sustained and widespread protest to this end.
He also appealed to all sections of people to support the general strike.
Ratankumar asked all employees detailed for census works to stay away from the same works.
Meanwhile, the Joint Action Coordination Committee (JACC), Lairikyengbam Leikai and the Nagaram Village Authority held a meeting today at Nagaram and the meeting agreed to extend unstinted support to the ongoing movement for updating the NRC before census.
The meeting also came to an agreement for indigenous people of the area to work collectively on key issues of the State.
It further resolved that the Manipur Legislative Assembly should adopt resolutions to implement the NRC and resolve key issues during the session which commences on September 2 .
