HM, RS MP appeal to call off general strike

Imphal, August 31 2026: Citing the Government of India's decision to defer census operations in Manipur, Home Minister Govindas Konthoujam, Rajya Sabha Member A Sharda and BJP MLA Kh Joykisan have appealed to the JFD to withdraw the general strike which came into effect from this midnight.

Speaking to media persons at Thambal Shanglen, Keishampat this evening, Govindas said that some BJP MLAs including Chief Minister Y Khemchand and himself went to Delhi recently and met with many Central leaders.

Govindas said that they highlighted in clear and unequivocal terms the possible impacts of conducting Census 2027 as per schedule during the meeting with Central leaders.

The Union Home Minister assured the Chief Minister that the Government will fulfil the wishes of the people of Manipur, he said.

BJP Manipur Pradesh and Rajya Sabha Member A Sharda remarked that the Government of India has decided to defer the house listing work in line with the people's wish.

Sharda also exuded confidence that the Central Government will take up appropriate steps regarding the demand for updating the NRC .

MLAs Th Radheshyam, Dr Sapam Ranjan, Kh Ibomcha, Kh Joykisan and Dinganglung Gangmei were also present at the press meet.

Earlier, while opening a free health check-up and consultation programme at Chamber Hospital, Thangal Bazar, MLA Joykisan appealed to all concerned to refrain from imposing bandhs and general strikes which will cause hardship to the public.

The health check-up and consultation programme for women was organised by the Mahavir International, Imphal Chapter in association with Lisa Aesthetics and Gynaecology.

Joykisan remarked that the people's demand to first update the NRC before census is quite legitimate.

The State Government has been working to persuade the Central Government to first update the NRC and defer the census exercise, he said.

CSOs may go on exerting pressure on the Government until illegal immigrants are identified but bandhs and blockade which will cause hardship to the public should be avoided, he added.
