Demand for NRC continues

Imphal, August 31 2026: Five organisations viz All Manipur United Clubs' Organisation (AMUCO), All Manipur Women's Voluntary Association (AMAWOVA), Poirei Leimarol Meira Paibi Apunba Manipur (PLMPAM), Committee on Human Rights (COHR) and Manipuri Students' Federation (MSF), organised a sit-in protest at Kwakeithel Akham Leikai Community Hall today, demanding that the National Register of Citizens (NRC) be updated.

During the demonstration, the protesters displayed placards bearing slogans such as "No Census Before NRC", "Work out a solution that would bring lasting peace in Manipur", "State Assembly must adopt a resolution to identify illegal immigrants" and "Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls should not be implemented", among others.

Speaking to the media, AMUCO president Sorokhaibam Sanjoy alleged that the Government of India (GoI) has not stopped scheming to suppress Manipur.

He also accused the GoI of waging a proxy war in Manipur by allegedly training and arming Kuki groups, both those under the Suspension of Operations (SoO) pact and those outside it.

Sanjoy further claimed that the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls should not be valid, as the exercise is similar to the census and could potentially result in illegal immigrants being wrongfully granted voting rights.

People are aware of the various issues allegedly created by the GoI in Manipur, he claimed.

Saying that the census system was introduced by the British in 1872, Sanjoy said the first census and NRC exercise in independent India were conducted in 1951 .

Demanding that the NRC be updated in Manipur with 1951 as the base year to identify illegal immigrants, the AMUCO leader said the census could be postponed in a State facing a disaster or a law-and-order situation.

He stated that the situation in Manipur is not conducive to conducting a census.

Saying that they are prepared to launch a massive movement if their demands are not addressed, Sanjoy urged the Government to pass a resolution for updating the NRC .
