Promotion of the vanishing indigenous fishes would not only help in improving the economy of the State but would also ensure health of the people, Director of Environment and Ecology, Govt of Manipur Dr Maibam Homeshor has stated.
Speaking as chief guest of the concluding function of three-day long indigenous fish culture training cum extension course at the training hall of S Tomba and Son's Integrated Semi-Intensive Fish Farming Pvt Ltd, Hiyangthang today pointed out that besides generation of income, consumption of indigenous fish varieties help in improving the immune system.
Elaborating on the observation, Dr Homeshwor explained apart from delectable taste, nutritional value of indigenous fishes is very high.
Absence of these fishes from the daily meal of the people has thus become one of the causes for being infected by diseases easily today.
Increase in the production of the indigenous fishes which have great demand would also automatically secure the income of the pisciculturists and ultimately help in improving the economy of the State, he added.
Commencing from January 17, the training programme was conducted by S Tomba and Son's Integrated Semi-Intensive Fish Farming Pvt Ltd in collaboration with the Environment and Ecology Wing of the State Government.
Proprietress of the fish farm S Akashini Devi presided over the valedictory function which was also attended by former Joint Director of Fisheries Department Kh Chandra, Research Assistant of the Department A Kullachandra, Fisheries Inspector L Ibohal and Reader in Zoology Department of Oriental College RK Rasheshori as guests of honour.
Certificates were also distributed among the trainees at the occasion.
Earlier, on the third day of the training programme today, Research Assistant of Fisheries Department A Kullachandra, proprietor of the fish farm S Surchandra and former Joint Director of Fisheries Department Kh Chandra respectively imparted knowledge on 'Modern technique of Magur (Ngakra) clairas bactrachus seed production in Manipur', 'Some scientific management practice to be taken up during winter with reference to Pengba, Ngaton and Ngakra' and 'Pre-stocking and stocking management of grow-out ponds' to the trainees.
