Imphal, December 06 2022:
The Union of Treatment and Reha-bilitation of Users for Social Transformation (U-TRUST) has claimed that they rescued two inmates from a rehabi-litation centre opened at Yairipok allegedly without fulfilling the criteria given by the Social Welfare Depart- ment.
Speaking to media persons at Manipur Press Club today, U-TRUST convenor Soraisam Gobby said that an association called Mohallah Wise Committee Anti-Drug Association based in Lilong nabbed two drug users from the surrounding areas of Samurou on November 26 .
Saying that the drug users were admitted in one rehabilitation centre opened at Yairipok which doesn't meet the conditions set by the Social Welfare Department, Gobby claimed that the two drug users were found kept together in a small room which acts both as a place of eating and toilet.
He went on to claim that the inmates were also administered medicines not prescribed by the doctors.
They were treated like livestock, he alleged.
Further maintaining that the staff of the rehabilitation centre displayed carelessness when they (U-TRUST members) went for inspection to the rehabilitation centres, Gobby stated the State police is not taking the matter seriously despite apprising the matter to them.
He urged the Social Welfare Department to look into the matter at the earliest.
Every rehab centre must follow the guidelines given by the Social Welfare Department and not see the drug users from a religious point of view, he urged.
He then said the two drug users have been rescued by the union with the help of authority concerned.
