Two accused held, JAC demands arrest of all

Two female teachers of Saina Institute of Medical Sciences (SIMS), who were accused of abetting in outraging modesty of a student of the Institute by its founder, surrendered to the police on Monday, following which they were formally arrested.
However, the JAC formed in connection with case has cautioned of launching intense protests until all the absconding accused persons are apprehended.
On Monday, accused teachers Sonia Yambem alias Yambem Nonibala Chanu (29) of Bamon Kampu Yambem Leikai and Laishram Kunjarani Devi (28) of Top Khongnangkhong surrendered themselves to Women Police Station, Imphal West.
Subsequently, they were produced before the court of Judicial Magistrate First Class Imphal West, Lamphel on Tuesday, which remanded them to 3 days in police custody.
After receiving news that the duo would be produced in the court, members of the JAC thronged Lamphel court complex.
However, the police took both accused away through the rear gate of the court complex.
The JAC members expressed their frustration and demanded other absconding accused be arrested as soon as possible, while further warning against any attempt to cover up the crime.
Later, a press meet was held at Manipur Press Club wherein JAC convenor Laishram Roshni said that although the authority had been urged for a long time to arrest all the people involved in the crime, no arrests were made for quite some time.
The two accused teachers were arrested only after they gave in to the police on Monday.
However, the main accused, namely SIMS founder Surjitkumar and teacher Wajid are still absconding.
Stating that the agitations will continue until the two remaining accused have not been arrested, she informed that sit-in protests will be staged from Wednesday onwards, while urging the government to take serious note of the case and see to the arrests.
She further demanded the remaining two accused be arrested within 3 days, failing which the Indo-Myanmar road will be shut down from the fourth day onwards, in addition to launching other intense protest.
