Imphal, September 30 2023:
The COCOMI has strongly condemned the act of assaulting Kangleipak Students' Association (KSA) leader Sukham Bidyananda by a team of Manipur Police.
Speaking to media persons at their Lamphelpat office this afternoon, COCOMI Women Wing Assistant Coordinator RK Tharaksana said that they have taken serious note of physically assaulting KSA president S Bidyananda by a team of Manipur Police.
S Bidyananda was going home after attending a press meet called by several organisations when he was beaten up by the escort personnel of IGP Zone-I Themthing Ngashangva at Moirangkhom Loklaobung bridge at around 8.20 pm on September 27 .
Maintaining that physically assaulting the student leader even after he identified himself cannot be condoned under any circumstances, RK Tharaksana said that COCOMI would not remain silent if the police personnel involved in the incident are not awarded befitting punishment.
She also reminded Chief Minister N Biren's assurance that security forces would not be allowed to commit any excess against students' protest movements and that befitting action would be taken up if any security personnel is found committing excesses upon students.
If the Chief Minister cannot keep his words, it would not be wrong to assume that his assurance is nothing but empty promise, Tharaksana said.
Many students sustained critical injuries when CAPF and State Police unleashed brute force upon students who were protesting against the brutal murder of their two colleagues by armed Kukis.
They are still undergoing treatment in hospitals, she said.
COCOMI Women Wing welcomed and greatly appreciated when the Chief Minister announced that all police personnel involved in committing excesses against students would be penalised, she said.
But it remains a big question whether the Chief Minister is keeping his words or not, Tharaksana continued.
