Imphal, August 18 2023: A delegation of CPI (M) comprising National general secretary Sitaram Yechury (Ex-MP Rajya Sabha) and Jitendra Chowdhury, Ex-MP Lok Sabha and six others called on Governor Anusuiya Uikey at Raj Bhavan this evening and apprised her of the present situation of Internally Displaced People (IDPs) staying in different relief camps.

Sitaram Yechury while informing the Governor said his team visited different relief camps in Imphal, Moirang and Churachandpur where they found that arrangements being made by State Government/local bodies in maintaining and running the relief camp are not satisfactory.

He said, IDPs are deprived of nutritious food especially children and lactating mothers and even babies are being born in the camps.

How long the IDPs can survive in such a situation, he said.

Only a political solution can bring peace to the ongoing crisis and his party has already raised this issue to the Centre, he added.

The team also expressed concerns over the issue of snatching/looting of weapons from armouries of different police stations.

The Governor while welcoming the delegation said political parties, cutting across party lines, need to cooperate with the Government in bringing an amicable solution to the ongoing conflict.

She said violence will not bring any solution and therefore several appeals have been made to the two communities to shun violence and move forward for talks.

The Governor continued that incidents which claim many valuable lives are unfortunate and all have to be united to end this conflict.

Acknowledging their concerns, the Governor said, she had visited many relief camps in both hill and valley districts and the administration has been asked to provide all essential requirements including foods, medicines, clothes etc to the IDPs and efforts will be made further to ensure availability of all requirements of the people.

The Governor informed the delegation that she had personally met the Prime Minister and other Central leaders and urged them to find ways to end the conflict at the earliest possible time.

Earlier in the day, the Governor met a team of senior officials of BSF led by Sonali Mishra, ADG, BSF (EC) .

Mishra while briefing about the security situation said, 51 companies of BSF are being deployed in nine districts of Manipur to assist the administration in maintaining law and order.

She said maximum deployment is in Imphal mostly in the adjoining areas of valley and hill districts (buffer zone) and strict vigil is being maintained to prevent any further untoward incidents.

Although there have been resistance from people in some areas, mostly by women folks, the force is in touch with local populace and making them aware about the need to create a congenial atmosphere for restoration of peace and normalcy, she said.

Advocating the need to deploy a specific force to a specific area, the ADG said that it will help to chalk out plans to face any eventuality in the area.

The Governor while appreciating the efforts of BSF, said the security forces are meant to save/help people and therefore all forces should work in this direction.

She said there may be some issues of resistance but efforts are on to make people aware about the need to cooperate with State and Central security forces.

She said many appeals have been made to various women organisations to cooperate with security forces while meeting them at Raj Bhavan.

She asked the ADG to assess the situation in the adjoining peripheral areas and so that logistical assistance can be provided to the people in times of need.

The Governor said efforts are on to bring peace and normalcy by Central and State Governments.

She had visited many relief camps both in the hill and valley districts and asked the administration to provide all assistance to the people staying in the camps.

A team of artisets led by Thoithoiba Mayanglambam of Kakching Khunou also met the Governor at Raj Bhavan today and raised issues pertaining to the artistes fraternity and presented a portrait of the Governor painted on a Yangkok.

The team also requested the Governor to be the chief guest for Solo Arts Exhibition to be held in the last week of September in Imphal.

The Governor also assured to extend all possible assistance to the artist fraternity.

Dr Suhel Akhtar, former Addl Chief Secretary, Manipur also called on the Governor at Raj Bhavan this evening, said PRO Raj Bhavan in a statement.
