Imphal, July 14 2023:
An open discussion on "Manipur gi wathok athubada loisillu" which roughly translates as 'End the violence in Manipur expeditiously' was held today at Manipur Press Club and took some resolutions.
One of the resolutions taken during the discussion organised by All Manipur Nupi Marup (AMNM) was to urge the Government to convene a special Assembly session so that both the ruling and Opposition parties could work out a solution.
The programme also urged Chief Minister N Biren Singh to admit if he couldn't convene the Assembly session demanded by the people.
Further, the gatherings asked the 50 MLAs (excluding the 10 Chin Kuki MLAs) to resign if they couldn't control the violence which would enter its third month in a few weeks.
Saying that the unity and integrity of Manipur should never be compromised as an appeasement policy nor the demand of separate administration be granted, the discussion programme agreed to start a protest under the banner "Jail Thalhanlo (Fill the prison)" as both the Centre and Manipur have failed to contain the violence.
The AMNM also urged the Government to lift the ban on internet services as soon as possible and implement the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Manipur before the delimitation exercise scheduled to be held in 2026 .
The discussion programme was attended by former acting Chairperson of Manipur Human Rights Commission (MHRC) Khaidem Mani, CPI National executive member Dr M Nara, Editor of Sanaleibak daily Hemantakumar Ningombam, AMNM president Th Sakhi, Minority Muslim Vendor Welfare Association president Jano Begum and Kabui Mothers' Association, Manipur president Atongpi Kamei.
At the programme, AMNM general secretary Lairenjam Sumatibala said that the Central and Manipur Governments haven't taken up any tangible actions to control Manipur violence.
Urging the Government to control the Kuki militants who violate the ground rules of Suspension of Operation (SoO) pact and deliberately attack Meitei civilians, she said that deportation of illegal foreigners to their native countries is indispensable to restore normalcy in the State.
Sumatibala also sought the intervention of the Defence Minister and Union Minister of External Affairs as Governor Anusuiya Uikey hinted at the involvement of foreigners in Manipur violence.
Reminding that the Union Minister of State for External Affairs Dr Ranjan is a Lok Sabha MP from Manipur, she said that MP, however, is tight-lipped now when Manipur needs him the most.
It seems like there is nobody to control the violence, Sumatibala continued and asked the retired officers, scholars and intellects of Manipur to guide the youth and women who guard the villages in the foothills and periphery of valley districts.
