Imphal, July 22 2023:
A large number of womenfolk today blocked Tidim Road demanding unconditional release of the 21 people arrested and sent to judicial custody in connection with torching a vehicle of IGP (Zone-II) in Kwakeithel area on July 17 .
Large groups of womenfolk blocked Tidim Road at Sangaiprou junction and Ghari area by burning tyres in the middle of the road this morning.
Soon after, a strong police force led by Imphal West SP Dr S Ibomcha arrived at the spot asked the agitating womenfolk to clear the road and allow movement of vehicles.
But the agitating women refused to open the road, resulting in a heated argument between the agitators and police regarding the demand for releasing the arrested persons without any conditions.
Some women even mov-ed toward the police, courting arrest.
The agitators claimed that the arrested persons were not involved in the incident of torching the IGP (Zone II )'s vehicle and that they are innocent.
They maintained that innocent persons have been arrested as scapegoats just to hide the failure of State police to arrest those who were actually involved in the incident.
To bring the situation under control and to clear the road for normal traffic movement, police later fired several rounds of tear gas shells and mock bombs.
Subsequently, the situation was brought under control and normal traffic resumed along Tidim Road.
A large number of police personnel have been deployed in the area to prevent any further agitation.
