Imphal, July 22 2023:
Restoration Manipur (RM) has expressed suspicion on the timing of the release of the video of a mob parading naked two women, which took place on May 4, as it coincided with the commencement of monsoon session of the parliament.
In a statement, RM pointed out that as women and children of both sides in the conflict have suffered unimaginable horror due to the conflict, every perpetrator of such crimes should be awarded capital punishment irrespective of which community they belong to.
As for the viral video of May 4 incident, it is highly suspicious how the video surfaced after a gap of 78 days, just before the commencement of monsoon session of parliament.
It could be a well-planned move to fuel unrest and sweep public emotion.
However, regardless of the motive behind circulating the video, such crimes are highly condemnable, the statement said while urging all concerned to refrain from such acts in future.
It further stated that Manipuri society upholds women in high regard and the May 4 incident was handiwork of some uncivilised individuals.
This should not be used to taint the whole society.
Even though the Prime Minister selectively spoke on the incident instead of addressing the core issue, it is indeed commendable that the PR has broken his silence, which could be signs of the centre finally prepared to resolve the crisis, it maintained, adding that responsibility for the indescribable suffering of the common people should be borne by the Central and state governments.
