24th State Handloom Day observed

Handloom Promotion Council under the aegis of Handlooms and Textiles Department observed the 24th State Handloom Day at Manipur Press Club here Tuesday.
Speaking as the chief guest, Manipur State Commission for Women chairperson Salam Ulka noted that people not only prefer the local handloom products but handloom and handicrafts sector is a huge source of livelihood for the women.
In acknowledgement of women's role in the development of textiles industries in Manipur since time immemorial ages, the government also has been providing assistance to the weavers from time to time as encouragement, she said and called for concerted efforts in promoting the handloom and handicraft products of the state at the international level.
Presided over by Manipur Apex Handloom Weavers & Handicrafts Artisans' Cooperative Society Limited president Indira Kshetrimayum, the observance was attended by Imphal East deputy commissioner Khumanthem Diana as guest of honour.
During the observance, 18 weavers and Malemnganba School, Andro who/which have been producing schools and college uniforms made with the traditional looms 'lyong', were honoured with cash prizes, certificates and mementos.
