Scanty rainfall no worry for Lanyathel farmers

Even as several hundred acres of paddy fields across the state remain uncultivated owing to scanty rainfall and absence of irrigation network, farmers of Langathel village in Thoubal district are able to focus on food production, thanks to the Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchai Yojana-Har Khet Ko Pani (PMKSY-HKKP) scheme which chief minister N Biren launched in August 28, 2020 .
Farmers of the said village also expressed gratitude towards to the Minor Irrigation Department for installing ground water tube-wells under the Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchai scheme funded by Union Ministry of Jal Shakti thereby ensuring sufficient water for cultivation of paddy and other food crops.
According to farmers Birbal Sagolsem and Moirangthem Kesorkumar, both from Langathel Mamang Leikai, the Minor Irrigation Department installed total of seven tube-wells through which water is supplied to several acres of paddy fields at Langathel Sandabi, Patarou, Lairam, Pangal Khumang and Walenpokpi Loukol.
Before the installation, farmers struggled in cultivating paddy in the said areas, the farmers recounted, adding that the tube-wells now provide abundant water to the fields throughout the year, thus facilitating double or triple cropping.
Minor Irrigation Department SO W Birmal said that 90 per cent of the works to install 50 tube-wells under Minor Irrigation Thoubal Sub Division has been completed.
Apart from Langathel, works for installing tube-wells at Khongjom, Papal, Tentha, Kakching, Keirak and Sugnu are underway, Birmal stated, adding that, the sites of installation were selected after careful survey carried out with the help of local MLAs and farmers.
