Youth held for stealing War Memorial plaque

Police posted at Khongjom IB outpost with the assistance of local Meira Paibi activists and members of Integrated Mega Tourism Development Cooperative Society (IMTDCS) Limited apprehended a 27-year old youth for stealing bronze plaque of Khongjom War Memorial pillar installed at Kheba Ching, Khongjom on Monday.
The arrested youth has been identified as Thokchom Johnson son of Shyamtombi of Samaram Mamang Leikai.
According to Khongjom IB police post commander sub-inspector Y Shankardas, police launched investigation based on report about missing of the bronze plaque on June 24.On Monday around 11 am, Thokchom Johnson was caught red-handed by police and local Meira Paibi members and society members with another stolen plaque.
During questioning, he confessed of involvement in the June 24 theft case which led to recovery of the plaque stolen earlier.
Both the plaques have been handed over to IMTDCS Ltd, he said.
Meanwhile, IMTDCS secretary Oinam Sunil said that several properties of the complex were stolen in the past as there is no enclosure or gate.
He appealed to the people to refrain from such activities and cooperate in safeguarding the historical place, which is a pride of the state.
Recalling an assurance by chief minister N Biren for Rs 10 lakh funding for development works in the complex, he appealed to the government to release the fund at the earliest.
