Tributes paid to ex-MLA Bira, author Thoibi Devi

The 44th death anniversary of former MLA and CPI Manipur secretary Thokchom Bira was observed at Shantipur Lokchao, Sanjenbam on Monday.
The commemorative programme attended by workers of left and secular parties was marked by paying of floral tributes to the statue of Th Bira and recalling his dedicated service for the welfare of the people.
Meanwhile, Cultural Forum, Manipur on Monday observed the 104th birth anniversary.

As part of the observance, 213-218th edition of the peer-reviewed journal entitled "Ritu", a quarterly publication of the Forum, was also released.
The programme was attended by Manipur University retired professor Huirem Gi-hari Singh, Sahitya Akademi Manipuri Language Advisor Board convenor professor Rajen Toijamba and Forum president professor Koijam Shantibala Devi as the chief guest, guest of honour and functional president respectively.
During the programme, Sahitya Akademi awardee Dr Naorem Bidyasagar Singh recalled and commended contribution made by Thoibi Devi to enrich the profile of Manipuri literature.
The 104th birth anniversary of Thoibi Devi was also observed by Progressive Literature House at Irabot Museum Complex, Sanjenbam Shantipur in Imphal East district on Monday.
Speaking bn the occasion marked by offering of floral tributes to her photo, social worker Laishram Sotinkumar remembered Thoibi as a revolutionary poet who devoted her life for the sake of the motherland.
She was a brave woman who took part in the farmers' agitation to bring about an egalitarian society under the leadership of Lamyanba Hijam Irabot.
The present generation needs to understand and follow her paths, Sotinkumar stressed.
Presided over by CPI (M) Manipur secretary Kshetrimayum Santa, the observance function was also attended by Sarat Salam of CPI (M), Toijam Devanda and Laithangbam Shyam of Shiv Sena (UBT), Thiyam Jugindro and Hijam Narun of AAP, Kangjam Manoranjan of RSP and Thokchom Suresh and Kh Samungou of CPI.
