Imphal, January 02 2024:
The amount of Rs 38.06 crore sanctioned by the Union Home Ministry (MHA) as crop compensation package to farmers affected by the ethnic violence is yet to reach the farmers concerned till date, claimed United Committee Manipur (UCM) president Joychandra Konthoujam.
Along with organising a grand feast for residents of relief camps at its Langol unit office, UCM distributed 210 mosquito nets donated for the camp residents by The New Leaf Association (Nela) project coordinator Ngangbam Robert under the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) fund, on Tuesday.
Speaking at the function as chief guest, Joychandra recounted that following the attacks by Kuki narco-terrorists since outbreak of the ethnic violence on May 3, 2023, the farmers were not able to tend their field.
To compensate for loss of agriculture produce in the state, the union ministry sanctioned Rs 38.06 crore as crop compensation package for the violence-affected farmers.
However, the farmers are yet to avail benefit of the said package till date, he said and urged the state government to provide the package to the deserving beneficiaries at the earliest.
Joychandra further informed that the state government provides an amount of Rs 115 per day to the relief camp residents.
Though the said amount is distributed equally to all in most of the relief camps, there is suspicion that a portion of the amount has been misused in other relief camps.
The involved individuals misusing the relief money should ensure it reaches the targeted section of the society without further delay, he cautioned.
Commenting on Monday's Lilong incident wherein four Meitei Pangals lost their lives and scores suffered injuries, the UCM president shared the grief and sorrow of the bereaved family members and appealed all not to spread rumours in connection with the incident which could lead to communal tensions.
Joychandra also made a fervent appeal to all to ensure that all communities live in peace and harmony.
Presided over by UCM Langol unit president Haobijam Shamu, the function was also attended by Thongak Lairembi Masaikon Nupi Lup vice president Tongbram Vanu, Meitei Langol Lairembi Leikai Nupi Lup general secretary N Binita, Langol Women Development Association general secretary Sapam Thoi Leima, Langol Leimakhullen Chingmi Tammi Chaokhat Thourang Nupi Lup general secretary Wahengbam Sangita, Women Development and Culture Foundation, Langol Ningthou Leikai general secretary Yumlembam Sunita, Laimanai Apunba Nupi Lup general secretary Senjam Mimi and Women Society Laimanai Makha Leikai member Chungkham Ketuki as guests of honour.
