Imphal, August 31 2023:
Committee on Mass Protest against Assam Rifles submitted a reminder to the Prime Minister through the Governor on Wednesday, pertaining to the unfulfilled demands of a memorandum submitted previously calling for withdrawal of Assam Rifles from Manipur and removal of all buffer zones from the state.
The Committee also cautioned of holding a convention on September 4 and following up with intense agitations with the people if the government fails to take up any step with regard to honouring the demands.
Speaking at a press meet held in this regard at Uripok Khoisnam Leikai community hall on Thursday afternoon, Committee member Shamila Naosekpam recounted that it submitted a memorandum to the PM on August 9, following the excessive force used by Assam Rifles against the womenfolk who had protested against the proposed burial of Kuki-Zo bodies in Torbung Bangla on August 3.While the PM is appreciated for preventing the burial and maintaining the sanctity of Torbung Bangla, he has yet to put into action the other key demands, which included the removal of Assam Rifles and buffer zones from the state, she lamented.
Committee member Jenifer Khaidem then strongly condemned the legal notice sent by Assam Rifles to RPI (Athawale) national secretary Maheshwar Thounaojam for speaking in support of the Meira Paibis' demand for removal of the force from the state.
As such, she demanded for the withdrawal of the legal notice at the earliest.
