Apart from Nagaland all the Zeliangrong inhabited areas of Assam and Manipur observed this day to honour the heroic figure Haipou by giving floral tributes and lighting of candles in every household.
ZUF (K) maintained that Haipou Jadonang fought valiantly for the cause of the Zeliangrong people in particular and the Nagas people in general against the British colonists.
He raised the slogan "Makaam mei rui gong tu puni" in other words the "The people of the soil shall reign".
But sadly, Haipou was hanged to death on August 29,1931 on false implications without fulfilling his dream of "Free Makaam" .
The movement started by Haipou Jadonang continued under the leadership of Haipei Rani Gaidinliu who was also arrested and imprisoned by the British Government.
But the Zeliangrong and Naga people kept alive the spirit of freedom.
