Imphal, July 28 2023:
The Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) has asserted that it is essential for the Manipur Legislative Assembly to hold a session before the ongoing Parliament session concludes so as to restore peace in the State and safeguard its integrity.
Speaking to media persons at Congress Bhavan here today, MPCC president K Meghachandra said that a team of Opposition MPs is coming to the State in the face of the Government's failure to control the three-months old violence.
Even as the Opposition alliance INDIA has been pressing for discussion of the Manipur issue in the ongoing Parliament session by setting aside four days, BJP has been repeatedly turning down the same proposal, Meghachandra said.
The team of MPs who would be arriving here tomorrow has already moved a no confidence motion against the Central Government.
This move is aimed at eliciting Prime Minister Narendra Modi's statement on the Manipur violence, he said.
The team of MPs belonging to INDIA would meet several community leaders and collect a first hand account of the misery being endured by the people of Manipur, he said.
Meghachandra said that the main purpose of the INDIA team's two-day visit to Manipur is restoration of peace and normalcy in the State.
The most appropriate platform for deliberation on the ongoing violence and ways to bring an end to it is a special session of the State Assembly.
As such, the Congress and many like-minded parties have been asking for a special session, he said.
Reacting to IPR Minister Dr Sapam Ranjan's announcement that the State Assembly would hold a session in the second or third week of August, the MPCC president remarked that it is too late.
By that time, the ongoing crisis would be almost four months old, he said.
It is essential for the State Assembly to hold a special session in order to control the violence and bring an end to it, Meghachandra said.
Being a common platform for representatives of all the communities of Manipur, the State Assembly is the most appropriate platform to discuss the issue of separate administration demand and adopt a firm resolution to safeguard the integrity of Manipur, he asserted.
The resolution adopted in the special session of the State Assembly can be sent to the Government of India and the same may be discussed in the ongoing Parliament session, he continued.
He then urged the State Government to convene the Assembly session a little earlier.
He informed that a team of 18 MPs of Indian National Development Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) led by Congress MP Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury would land here at 12 noon tomorrow.
They would visit different relief camps in Churachandpur, Bishnupur, Imphal East and Imphal West and interact with the displaced people, Meghachandra added.
