Imphal, June 19 2023:
Manipuris living in Maharashtra have expressed deep concern over the on-going conflict in Manipur and feared that continuation of the violence will pose serious threat to the peace, security, and socio-cultural fabric of the state.
A World Meitei Council (Maharashtra Unit) release contended that the root cause of the conflict can be attributed to the significant influx of both armed and unarmed illegal immigrants from the neighbouring country, leading to the destabilisation of Manipur's demographic profile, resources, and protected areas/land.
The imbalance in land possession and purchasing rights, coupled with the trafficking of drugs and arms through the porous international boundaries, pose grave danger to the security of the state and subsequently, the nation, the release added.
While pointing out that Manipur has a rich history spanning thousands of years, and it is a land of immense cultural and historical significance, the Council cautioned that any attempts to disrupt its geography would not only distort its history, culture, and heritage but also undermine the aspirations and identity of Manipuris.
With reference to the escalating conflict and its potential wider ramifications, the Unit appealed to both the central and state governments to take immediate measures to restore peace and stability in Manipur and to work collaboratively to safeguard the security of the state and protect the interests of Manipuri communities.
