Land owners oppose location for IT hub

Affected land owners of the proposed IT Hub planned in Imphal East district have opposed, the project citing the hardships it would cause to the public and demanded the government to shift the project to some other location.
The aggrieved land owners raised the objection during the public hearing for taking feedbacks of villagers and preparing Social Impact Assessment (SIA) report and finalisation of Social Impact Management Plan (SIMP) held at Mantripukhri Friends' Colony, Imphal East on Thursday.
The SIA unit of directorate of environment and climate change conducted the public hearing for people of Mantripukhri, Chingmeirong Nongpok and Meitei Kairang areas.
Local people including affected land owners, and representatives of clubs, organisations and local bodies attended the hearing.
Raising objection against the proposed project, the villagers demanded the government to relocate the project site stating that the villagers will face immense hardships in case their lands are acquired by the government for the project.
They demanded the government to stop exploiting the public in the name of taking up development projects.
Joint director of environment and climate change, and nodal officer of SIA unit T Brajakumar explained the difference between land eviction and land acquisition, and assured that the government will never force the public to give up their land.
He further said that out of the 423 land plots, 41 are homestead lands and the remaining agricultural lands as per official record.
He then asked the land owners to convert their land into homestead land before the government seeks consent from them.
