Thoubal, January 17 2024:
As tensions escalate in the valley area following the fresh round of attacks by Kuki militants in Moreh town resulting in multiple casualties among the state police commandos, a large group of people attempted to storm the office of the SP of Thoubal district, resulting in injuries to 10 persons on Wednesday.
The protestors, in a bid to draw attention to the urgent situation in Moreh, demanded that the police assist the beleaguered commandos.
In response, law enforcement agencies resorted to firing tear gas, smoke bombs, and live rounds to disperse the agitated crowd.
The injured individuals have been identified as Thoithoiba (26) of Thoubal; Krishnanda (18), Govindas (27), & Moirangthem Anilkumar (28) of Khangabok; Pamheiba (18) of Athokpam; Bhogen (40) & Malemnganba (38) of Poiroukhongin (Imphal East); Sahan (20) of Salungpham; Johnson (24) of Nungei; and Chingkheinganba (25) of Charangpat Maning Leikai.
The situation erupted following the death of two Commando (CDO) personnel and injury to others in attacks by Kuki militants in Moreh earlier on the day.
Reports suggest that the militants used a range of weapons, including RPGs, incendiary munitions, illuminating mortars, and snipers in the assault.
The border town of Moreh has been witnessing persistent attacks for several months, contributing to an atmosphere of heightened insecurity.
