Tribute paid to freedom fighter Khagendrajit

Imphal, September 13 2023:
The 131st birth anniversary of freedom fighter Laikhuram Khagendrajit was observed at Khagendrajit Research Committee complex located at Wangkhei Keithel Ashangbi in Imphal on Wednesday.
DM University associate professor Dr Saratchandra Longjamba, Research Committee president Dr Mayengbam Kunjabihari and columnist Longjam Ramananda attended the event as chief guest, president and guest of honour respectively.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr Saratchandra lamented that the government is yet to grant formal recognition to Laikhuram Khagendrajit, who not only set up school for teaching and learning Meetei Mayek but also promoted sports, religion, and also revolted against water tax collection in 1932.He followed Hijam Irabot and revolted against the then British empire in 1945, he said and urged the committee to install a statue of the freedom fighter so that the future generations could remember him.
Floral tributes were also paid to the portraits of Khagendrajit as well as eight other freedom fighters namely Kshetrimayum Tomba of Khurai Soibam Leikai, Chongtham Meramacha of Khwai Lamabam Leikai, Hijam Hawaimaton of Yaiskul, Wayenbam Ningthoujao of Singjamei, Mutum Chaoba & Chungkham Yaima of Khwai Lalambung, Hijam Chaoton of Thangmeiband, and Pungshubam Ningthemjao of Wangkhei Lourembam Leikai on the occasion.
A two-minute silence was also observed in memory of the commit tee's former president Sapam Momon and former secretary Laitojam Premkumar.
